Global Education + STEM = “Spruce Up Rio” App!

We are pleased to announce the “Spruce Up Rio” App launch developed by Pleasant Ridge Montessori (PRM) students with our partners at Northern Kentucky University and Greater Cincinnati World Affairs Council (GCWAC). The app can be purchased for $.99. A portion of the proceeds returns to PRM for use in extending Science Technology Math Engineering (STEM) programs.

Facilitated by the Ohio Department of Education “Straight A” Innovation Fund, with funding provided by the Governor and Ohio General Assembly, PIE thanks PRM for participating in this STEM program.

This $1,100,000.00 grant initiative provided 18 public schools with new technology (32 iPads, covers, charging cart), STEM in-classroom training materials, app/coding development and an educator team facilitating the 2-year process.

Pioneered at Harvard University, the Socratic Case Method is typically found in law, medical, business, engineering, science and mathematics graduate and undergraduate programs. PRM students were asked to help develop a “case” featuring an open-ended, authentic problem facing a community or business partner.

With PRM educator oversight, students performed research, created analytical and quantitative tools, tested hypotheses, and presented a vetted solution to case stakeholders, while meeting STEM Learning Standards. It has been our pleasure to facilitate the first U.S. program using case-based, experiential learning with middle and elementary public school students. As a result of this program, we are thrilled to announce Miami University will serve as our partner in creating educator-training materials available next year for all Cincinnati Public School educators.
