For those with a love of British culture, we can easily say that there are certain traits that exemplify their popular films and television shows: charm, wit, brilliance, emotion, and imagination. From Sherlock to Downton Abbey, The King’s Speech to Doctor Who, and everything in between, most (if not all) of these qualities are prevalent; therefore, it’s easy to see why these same qualities would be reflected in British advertising as well.

The best of British advertisements are like small films in themselves; they often have plots and character development. These advertisements are rarely direct, as the goal is to engage the audience and incite emotion in the hearts of viewers. These advertisements even go so far as to withhold the sponsor information until the very end to maintain complete immersion in the story.

The 2015 British Arrows Awards, hosted by the Cincinnati World Cinema (CWC), is a compilation of the best of British advertisements from television, cinema, and the internet. These short films are fascinating glimpses into some of the most creative minds in the U.K. Tim Swallows, director of the CWC, said this about the event:

“This is our sixth annual presentation of the British Arrows, which has proven to be one of our most popular events. It is very similar to our Oscar Shorts and Lunafest programs –the Arrows are just like short films and very funny –our audiences love them.”

This advertisements will show for two weekends: October 17th-18th and 24th-25th at The Showboat Majestic, 7pm each evening with 4pm matinees.

Here is an example of an advertisement for BBC Music:

An all-volunteer organization now in its fourteenth year, the CWC showcases outstanding motion pictures not normally shown in the metro area, with a focus on those that explore the human condition and celebrate cultural diversity. International, independent, documentary and short films are frequently followed by discussions with filmmakers or local experts.
