Indian Hill Forums Take on Globalization

The head of the Greater Cincinnati World Affairs Council will kick off a series of forums on globalization set for October in Indian Hill.

Richard Lauf, chairman of the council’s board of directors and a retiree, will present “Brexit: a Warning Shot Against Globalization” from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, at Indian Hill Church, 6000 Drake Road.

“Globalization is a phenomenon that has remade the economy of virtually every nation, reshaped almost every industry and touched billions of lives, often in surprising and ambiguous ways,” said forum organizer Gerri Strauss, a member of Indian Hill Church.

“It is meant to signify integration and unity, yet it has proved – in its way – to be no less polarizing than the Cold War divisions it has supplanted.

“Come and join us at Indian Hill Church as we try to untangle the importance of various aspects of globalization,” Strauss said.

Strauss said the church is pleased that Lauf has agreed to lead a forum about the United Kingdom’s vote to leave the European Union.

“(Lauf) had a long career at Procter & Gamble, where he worked on such international projects as restructuring their European manufacturing and distribution as the EU borders opened, dealing with the Venezuela hyperinflation and integrating the Richardson-Vicks acquisition into P&G Mexico,” Strauss said.

Three more globalization forums will begin at 9 a.m. on successive Sundays at Indian Hill Church.

All of the forums are free and open to the public.

Oct. 9 – Joe Dehner, a lawyer with Frost Brown Todd of downtown Cincinnati, will present “Free trade agreements: the pros and cons.”

Dehner has chaired Frost Brown Todd’s International Services Group for more than 20 years.

Oct. 16 – Allison Herre and Daniel Sarell of Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio will present “Understanding a migrant’s journey.”

Herre is director of Legal Immigration Services at Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio.

An immigration attorney, she helps families and represents children from Central America who are facing deportation.

Sarell is director of Mission Advancement at Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio.

He has more than 20 years’ experience in Catholic parish and diocesan ministry.

Oct. 23 – Mary (Peggy) Shukairy, a lawyer with Frost Brown Todd, will present “World Migration in the Age of Globalization.”

She practices immigration law and helps people get immigrant and non-immigrant employment-based visas.
