Global Partners: Thank you for hosting visitors through the U.S. Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program!
Cincinnati welcomed the following delegations through the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP):
Seven visitors from Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, and Venezuela visited the region on the topic of “Ending Gender Based Violence.” The group sought out to review best practices for preventing gender-based violence, discuss techniques for identifying forms of gender-based abuse, and examine education and outreach initiatives which focus on women’s legal rights, educating men and boys about their responsibility as family members to avoid perpetuating gender-based violence, and combating trafficking in persons.
Thank you to Bad Girl Ventures, Judge Brad Greenberg, Judge Timothy Black, University of Cincinnati, Valley of Interfaith Community Resource Center, Adams Brown Community Action Partnership, SANE of Butler County, and Women Helping Women for meeting with the delegation.
Nine visitors from Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan visited on the topic of “Human and Civil Rights Advocacy and Awareness.” In town they met with organizations to explore the role of organizational structure of associations, NGOs, and religious groups in advancing U.S. civil rights and equal opportunities, to analyze a variety of human rights concerns related to issues including disability rights, freedom of press, access to education, and due process. The group also touched on examining the historical context of human rights advocacy in the United States and the contemporary foreign policy issues resulting from the United Nations’ adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Five visitors from Colombia visited on the topic of “Strengthening Public Health Strategies to Address Emergent Viruses.” The group was looking to expand the participants’ professional networks, build partnerships, examine the US public health system, explore health care delivery to undeserved and disadvantaged populations, and look at the role of community outreach and public awareness practices related to public health issues.
Thank you to Univeristy of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Ohio Collaborative to Prevent Infant Mortality, Interact for Health, Princeton High School, and Northern Kentucky University College of Health Professions for meeting with the delegation.
Lastly, four visitors from the Kyrgyz Republic came on the topic of “Education in the US.” The delegation learned about school administration, the teacher evaluation process, teaching STEM, curriculum development, and the modernization of educational content.

Education:
In partnership with the council, University of Cincinnati students held a Model United Nations program on March 24-25, 2017. Michelle Harpenau, Executive Director, opened the program with her background and international experiences. Inspiring students to pursue study abroad, participate in GCWAC education programs, and become well rounded #GlobalCitizens.
