Opportunities with International Visitors
Professional Hosts – Volunteer to meet with visitors to share your successes and challenges within your career or industry. It is a chance to represent your government and country while expanding diplomatic relations. All visitors will be accompanied by an interpreter or an English Language Officer as a liaison from the U.S. Department of State. International Visitors are current or emerging leaders from across the world who come to the U.S. on the Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) or other exchange programs.
Dinner Hospitality Hosts – Host an informal meeting with International Visitors over a home-cooked meal. It may be dinner in a host’s home or at a restaurant, or a social activity such as attendance at a local sporting or cultural event, a sightseeing trip, or a barbeque or picnic on a weekend. The hosts may be a family, a couple, or a single person. This is a very exciting and new experience for visitors. It is a wonderful two-way exchange of politics, similarities and differences, culture, family, professions, etc. and is one of the most beneficial ways for Americans and visitors to put a true face to the countries.
Volunteer Driver – Be a tour guide and spend the day driving visiting guests around the greater Cincinnati region (usually during a week day) and you may be reimbursed for mileage. This is a wonderful opportunity to interact and develop relationships with international professionals, practice your language skills, and engage with local professionals interested in expanding their work and discovering more about their world.
Home Stay Hosts Overnight – Host a visiting guest in your home with you and your family for a weekend, week, or month. Here is a chance to make lasting friendships with people from around the world, experience different and exciting cultures, and to hear first-hand what is happening in other countries. This is a unique opportunity to give guests a true perspective of the United States and create fond memories of generous and hospitable Cincinnatians.
Ambassador Escort – Take a day to ride along with visiting guests to attend their professional and cultural appointments in the area. This is a wonderful opportunity to interact, dialogue, and develop relationships with international professionals, practice your language skills, and engage with local professionals interested in expanding their work and discovering more about their world.
Opportunities with local students
International Education Summit – Speed Networker – GCWAC holds the annual International Education Summit during International Education Week in November. The most popular part of the high school event is the International Speed Networking session where local professionals share their international experience with tables of high school students for 6-8 minutes at a time. It is a fun and fast paced way for students to learn more about the international opportunities right here in our city!
Global Classroom Presenter – Visit schools throughout the Cincinnati region with GCWAC staff to help make presentations on various countries. Each presentation covers general information about the country like its population, size, flag, government, music, cuisine, and more. This is a great opportunity for international college students or those from different cultures to teach our community about their native country.
