The 2015 Academic WorldQuest Champions from Cincinnati
Announcing Cincinnati’s 2015 Academic WorldQuest Champions
This year’s 2015 Academic WorldQuest winners are Team “Tide” from Indian Hill High School and in a close second Team “Charky Jafier” from Mariemont High School. The 68 students formed 17 teams to participate in the fierce competition with international themed rounds at Oak Hills High School last Saturday.
Awards
The Greater Cincinnati World Affairs Council (GCWAC) will award team Tide with a $1,000 travel stipend in addition to hotel accommodations for the team to represent Cincinnati in the national competition in Washington, DC. The prizes don’t stop there! The winning team of four high school students and an four teachers from Indian Hill High School will play at the Council’s second annual gala event on March 7th One Mind One World One Night Gala. The gala is an international trivia competition similar to Academic WorldQuest.
The Council’s Global Education Director Katie Krafka stated of the event, “Four years ago there were only four team competing and now there are seventeen! I love seeing area students engage and learn more about their world while creating memories with their team!!”
National Competition
On April 25th, Team Tide will be competing against students from 40 local World Affairs Councils in 26 states. All the participating Councils, including GCWAC, are a national affiliate member with the World Affairs Council of America, host of the national competition.
One of the Moderators and the Council’s Executive Director Michelle Harpenau is confident of the team’s success in April: “The council has been getting to know Indian Hill High School students better and better this year by working to bring global education opportunities to their student club called United Cultures Club. These types of connections truly engage our local students in learning about the world. I am positive Team “Tide” will represent Cincinnati well!” Last year, the winning team “Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch” from Princeton High School placed 8th out of 43 teams.
Volunteer Power
The program would not have been possible with out the hard work and dedication of local volunteers. The Greater Cincinnati World Affairs Council would like to thank Global Education Intern Evan Otte, GCWAC Board Chair Catharina Toltzis, long time GCWAC volunteer Jay Jones and new GCWAC volunteer Leila Chamankhah, for spending a fun Saturday investing in the next generation of Global Leaders.
