Global Exchange Intern Miranda Luna
Internship Role
My experience with the Greater Cincinnati World Affairs Council started this past January when I began an internship as the Development Intern and helped with the second annual Gala – ONE Mind – ONE World – ONE Night. I later assisted with the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). I worked on specific programs and would arrange professional, cultural and educational appointments in Cincinnati for international visitors.
Our Interconnected World
It was during this time that I started to understand the immense impact that the Council has on many different levels. The Council reaches out locally to schools to educate younger generations on other cultures and increase their overall global awareness. The Council also works with the US Department of State through the International Visitor Leadership Program.
It is crucial, in this time, that an organization like the World Affairs Council exists and gets public support. It is a great time for international affairs. At one time I could be in Mexico, drinking tea from China, and eating Italian food. The world is becoming increasingly small and it is of the upmost importance to be diplomatic and friendly to our neighbors.
My Favorite Experience
My favorite experience with the council was being able to attend a meeting that I had arranged between a representative of Greater Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky Women’s Sports Association and an individual from France who wanted to learn about women in U.S. sports. The meeting completely validated all of the work that had been done in arranging the meetings for the visitor as there was great discussion and much learned.
I came to the Council to gain some experience in a non-profit environment and fell in love with an organization. As my internship with the Council comes to a close I can now say that I am a proud global citizen.
