The World Affairs Council celebrated an exciting week full of education, programming, and community engagement.Our education programs bring the world to the classroom by educating globally minded students today for globally-minded graduates and employees of tomorrow. Students transform from spectators into active and engaged global citizens in their communities and beyond. This past week was full of programming across the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area.

What is International Education Week?
International Education Week (IEW), November 12-16, 2018 is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.
This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of our efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences.
Global Dialogues at Miami Middletown University
Catalin Macarie, Assistant Professor of Business Management and Director of Freshman Experience at Carl H. Linder College of Business, University of Cincinnati spoke to undergraduates at Miami University Middletown Campus this week.
Marsha Robinson, Visiting Assistant Professor of World History at Miami had Catalin meet with her World History Since 1945 students to discuss China Geopolitics. Preparing students to be engaged, global citizens. Focusing on the cold war narratives running the 21st century, this course dives into the deep history of current trends. Catalin spoke to the students about his professional career, foreign trading in China and the U.S., and global politics.
Teacher Training at Winton Woods High School
Art Meets World at Summit View Academy
Brenda Comparan and Maria Garcia-Cruz of WorldPay met with our elementary students in Northern Kentucky to present the culture of Mexico. Brenda and Maria shared the similarities and differences of Mexico to the United States. They shared their culture through music, geography, food, and art. Following the presentation, the third-grade students were able to create their own sugar skulls in the classroom.

International Education Summit
This year, students at the Summit learned about global sustainability and water. Oliver Lawal, CEO of Aquisense Technologies has been involved with UV technology since the 1990’s. As the founder of Aquisense, he is able to execute his passion for chemical-free water treatment using UV-C LEDs. Oliver launched the event with a presentation on water and its impact on our local and global world. Aquisense hosted a sustainable water experiment after the presentation, the students were able to test the different types of water for bacteria and E-coli. The high school students had the opportunity to “Speed Network” with international professionals in our community to discuss their careers and involvements.

Global Classroom at Gray Middle School
To conclude our week, Arnela Hepner, Director of Special Projects presented her home country of Bosnia to students at Gray Middle School.
As she grew up in Northern Kentucky, she was able to share the commonalities and differences of Bosnia compared to the United States. Arnela spoke about her culture through music, art, geography, and food.
