Staff Member Feature: James’ North Carolina BBQ Recipe
This week’s Staff Feature is a delicious recipe from James McManus, our Director of International Programs. We hope this will inspire you to try a new recipe during these times! If you make this delicious BBQ, let us know how you liked it in the comments!
“One of my favorite hobbies is entertaining and cooking for friends and family. It’s been a part of my family life since I can remember when my family would go to my grandparents house for lunch after church on Sunday. Naturally I love when I get to share some of those food and memories with International Visitors being a Home Hospitality Volunteer with the World Affairs Council. As a Home Hospitality Volunteer I welcome visitors into my apartment for a home cooked meal and have the opportunity to learn about other people and places from my table. It’s one of the easiest, and tasty, ways to be a citizen diplomat.
While I’m a proud Cincinnatian I must confess that my go to meal to cook for visitors, BBQ, reflects my North Carolina upbringing. Its’ a recipe that reflects the finer tenets of southern cuisine, minimal fuss and a “good things can’t be rushed” philosophy. Southern BBQ’s most important ingredient is time, to roast your pork shoulder on low temperatures for several hours to get that melt in your mouth pulled BBQ.”

#MemoriesOfExchange
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to uproot and change our daily lives, the World Affairs Council – Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky wants to continue to be a force for global connections. While the pandemic has limited our ability to have emerging leaders visit our community physically, we’re working to continue highlighting our exchange alumni virtually.
Therefore, we’re inviting our exchange alumni to participate in our new social media campaign called “Memories of Exchange,” to highlight our exchange alumni and the work they do, their experience in the U.S./Cincinnati, and how COVID-19 is impacting their lives at home.
This week on our Facebook page, our interview with Rubinson Dorce, from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Click here for the full interview!
Join in on our #MemoriesofExchange campaign! Share your stories and memories of hosting and working with our international visitors so that we can share them with our larger community. Are you friends on social media with exchange visitors? Do you think they would like to share their memories of visiting Cincinnati and how COVID-19 is impacting their country? Get in contact with them to find out. Or, share your favorite memories as a host!
