Happy New Year! We’re excited for everything that 2022 has to offer and look forward to another year of educational programming and outreach. We’re excited to have you as a partner in this global work.

Don’t forget that there’s still time to register for our free virtual professional development sessions as part of our Skills for Students’ Future in the World series! We kick things off on Thursday, January 20th at 4pm with a discussion on using inquiry and questioning techniques in the classroom. Recordings and resources will be sent to those who register. In this session, teachers will learn more about the Inquiry Design Model and how inquiry-based learning can help students develop skills within the “investigate the world” domain of the Asia Society’s global competency framework. Teachers will explore resources that they can use to bring inquiry into the classroom. This session is geared toward middle and high school teachers who may be new to inquiry-based learning or want to view inquiry lessons that are more specific to cultural or global topics.

The Power of Storytelling in Communicating Ideas

In this session, teachers will discover resources and methods to engage students in the writing process and help students develop skills within the “communicate ideas” domain of the Asia Society’s global competency framework. We’ll move beyond the five-paragraph essay with methods such as editorial writing, podcasting, spoken word, and personal memoirs. Teachers will receive resources from The New York Times, The Pulitzer Center, Newseum Ed, Edutopia, and other organizations so they can implement these methods in their classrooms.

Educating for the Global World of Work

What skills are needed to succeed in a fast-paced, technologically advanced, and globalized economy? In this session, we will discuss ways in which to bring career exploration into your subject area and highlight enrichment opportunities available for students to set themselves up for success. Teachers will hear from a panel of individuals from organizations focused on technical education and experiential learning that help students prepare for the jobs of the future. We will also reflect on how this work contributes to the Asia Society’s “Investigate the World” global competency theme as well as P21’s “Life and Career Skills” focus.

Upcoming Teacher Programs:

Fulbright Teacher Exchanges: Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Research Program

  • Applications are now open and accepted through mid-February. Applicants will  be notified of acceptance this summer. The international field/teaching experience will take place during the 2022-23 school year.

  • This program provides an opportunity for K–12 educators from the United States to conduct research and engage in other professional learning experiences abroad for three to six months. Participants work on individual inquiry projects on a topic relevant to education in the United States and the host country, take courses at a host university, and collaborate with colleagues on educational practices to improve student learning.

  • Host countries include Brazil, Colombia, Finland, Greece, India, Mexico, Morocco, Singapore, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and Vietnam.

The Program for Teaching East Asia (University of Colorado Boulder): Seminars and Mini-Courses

Upcoming programs for teachers nationwide beginning in mid-January include:

  • Seminar: Modern Japan, Part II. Occupation through 2011 Triple Disaster.

  • Mini-course: Beijing on the Eve of the Olympics.

  • Seminar: Women in East Asia.

  • Seminar: Chinese Literature through History, Part II: The 20th Century.

Summer Programs

It may be winter, but we already have summer on our minds! The following summer programs have upcoming due dates. Learn more about other summer programs by viewing ODE’s Summer PD Spreadsheet.

Eastern Kentucky University: Study Education in England

  • Applications are now open and are due February 15th. Travel takes place from June 11-June 25, 2022. Apply here.

  • Tuition: $3,500 (Includes housing and most meals, on-site transportation, travel insurance and tuition.  NOT INCLUDED – round trip airfare.) Participants receive 3 hours of undergraduate or graduate credit.

  • Compare and contrast the educational system and classroom teaching/learning in England and Great Britain with the United States. Visit primary and secondary schools in Lincolnshire, England to observe instructional strategies, behavior management techniques, and educational leadership. Live in Harlaxton College located in a Victorian manor house in Grantham, England AND visit the English cities of Nottingham, York, Cambridge, and London.

National Consortium for Teaching About Asia (NCTA): Mapping Past & Present: Spirits & Beasts of East Asia

  • Applications due April 30th. Virtual program takes place from July 11-22, 2022 (Monday-Friday). Apply here.

  • From the legendary characters of myth and manga to the figurative demons of disease and war, the contours of East Asia have been defined by its spirits and beasts, real and imagined, from time immemorial. Join us in this free introductory seminar as we map the impact of these transnational forces in and beyond East Asia through the lenses of geography, art, religion, sports, literature, and more! Focusing on the regions that comprise present-day China, Japan, and Korea, participants will engage with experts and other educators in the field to explore major trends, global issues, and historic foundations that shape East Asian society. Our virtual journey will illuminate the region’s diverse cultures and environment while building and enhancing your tool chest of teaching resources for the classroom.

 

Happening in the Community This Month

World Affairs Council of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky: Annual Meeting

Wednesday, January 19th from 5:30-7pm at the offices of Graydon Head and Richey LLP.

  • Join us at our annual meeting to learn more about our impact in 2021 and how you can help us in our work. Registration is required and in-person attendees are limited.

Center for the City: Oral History Training

  • This in-depth workshop will be conducted by national oral history scholar, Doug Boyd of the Louis B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky. Boyd will train participants in oral history project design, interviewing techniques, recording techniques, transcription, archival preservation, and public presentation. Thanks to a generous grant from Ohio Humanities, this course is offered free of charge and all course materials will be provided.

  • The sixteen-hour workshop will be held on 2/5, 2/6, 2/19, and 2/20. Registrants are expected to attend all four sessions. Learn more and register here.
