Global Summer Camp Covington – Let’s Meet Gabby!
As we continue to share with you about our time at Camp Covington, we would like to feature a student named Gabby. Gabby did not know anything about Uganda or what a refugee was when we began our activities. At the end of camp, Gabby shared in writing her gratitude for your support and donations to bring Enock to her school. Her reflections beautifully express about meeting Enock, and what she learned with his tremendous journey.
Gabby wrote,
“Thank you for bringing Enock. I learned a lot when he was here. He is a great book writer. I learned a lot when he lived in Uganda. What shocked me was he had no phones or tablet or any devices in Uganda. I also learned Enock never gives up on his dream at soccer when he had to move away. In the book, he told 4-5 friends that he can trust. When he moved away he was sad but in the end I was glad when he got used to the town. He played soccer again and he told us he became a soccer player.”
Global Education Program Background: Camp Covington is an annual summer program of the World Affairs Council. Staff will go into all 5 elementary schools for the week to explore the world. The Council invites a Global Guide Fellow, a local student from a different country, to share his or her story with the students. This summer, the Council partnered with illustrated memoirs to bring a student author into the classroom and continued its partnership with the Center for Great Neighborhoods.
