Global Summer Camp 2023
This summer, we completed our 3rd global summer camp with Covington Independent Schools reaching over a 100 students. The students of camp Covington were eager to learn about our new Global Guide, Rojina, and to discover more about her life in Nepal. Their curiosity was clear in their questions and excitement to learn more about the life of refugees and Rojina‘s life in Nepal. Here are some of the questions they wondered about:
What kind of languages do they speak?
What kind of food do they eat?
What kind of books are there?
What kind of culture is there?
Why did you want to move here?
The students were particularly interested in learning about how Rojina’s school was in Nepal. They learned that Rojina’s classroom did not have any chairs so students
sat on the floor for the whole day. There was also no electricity and they didn’t have computers. At home in the refugee camp, Rojina didn’t have access to fresh food or water and getting around was only by foot. All of this was shocking to the students.
In reflecting on their learning from Rojina’s presentation one student shared, “When she said she had a lack of education and it was hard for her to find food, I learned to be grateful for what I have because not everybody has what I have.”
THANK YOU to all of our amazing donors for helping to make this program possible!
Global Education Program Background: Camp Covington is an annual summer program of the World Affairs Council. Staff will go into all 5 elementary schools for the week to explore the world. The Council invites a Global Guide Fellow, a local student from a different country, to share his or her story with the students. This summer, the Council continued its partnership with the Center for Great Neighborhoods and partnered with MakeTank Inc.
