A Memorable Experience at Miami University: Bridging Ideas and Global Perspectives

Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to engage with the vibrant community at Miami University—a place that truly embodies curiosity, innovation, and connection. From the moment I arrived on campus, it was clear that this institution fosters more than academic excellence; it cultivates a space where ideas meet action and global perspectives come to life.
A key highlight of the visit, I participated in a panel discussion with an exceptional group of Miami University employees who also volunteer with the World Affairs Council, each bringing a unique perspective:
- Cheryl Young – Associate Vice President, Global Initiatives, Miami University; Council Board Member; and leader in driving global education initiatives on campus.
- Alexis Andrews – Miami University Employee, Young Professionals Committee Member, innovating in her field while fostering connections between students and international programs.
- Eavan Kuehnle – Miami Student and Council Intern, contributing fresh perspectives and hands-on support for international exchange programs.
- Phillip Arceneaux – Assistant Professor of Strategic Communication, Miami University and Young Professionals Member, facilitating the conference session with expertise in civic engagement and international affairs.

Our discussion “World Affairs in Local Communities” spanned topics from international collaboration to the impact of educational exchanges, offering students and attendees a real-world view of how global affairs influence local communities. The curiosity and enthusiasm from the audience were palpable—they asked thoughtful questions, challenged assumptions, and expressed a genuine desire to contribute to solutions on a global scale.
What struck me most was the palpable sense of collaboration on campus. Whether through structured discussions or informal conversations over coffee, Miami University’s students and faculty demonstrated an eagerness to learn from each other, explore new ideas, and create meaningful connections. It was a reminder that fostering understanding across cultures and disciplines isn’t just an academic exercise—it’s a powerful driver of innovation and economic growth.
This experience also reinforced the importance of spaces like the World Affairs Council, which connect communities, entrepreneurs, and global leaders. By bringing people together to share knowledge and collaborate, we can spark ideas that extend far beyond a single classroom or panel discussion. The potential impact—both locally and globally—is immense.
I left Miami University inspired and energized, reminded that the future of global engagement depends on the willingness of individuals to listen, learn, and take action. The panelists’ diverse roles at Miami University and their dedicated volunteer work with the World Affairs Council exemplify how professional expertise combined with civic engagement can shape a more connected and informed world.
