International Education Week 2019
Happy International Education Week! An opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.
This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of our efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences.
We are so happy to be apart of an exciting week full of Global Education Programming. Our education programs bring the world to the classroom by educating globally-minded students today for globally-minded graduates and employees of tomorrow. Students transform from spectators into active and engaged global citizens in their communities and beyond.
2019 International Education Summit
This year we were honored to launch International Education Week (IEW) with our 13th Annual International Education Summit (IES). This program designed by the World Affairs Council – Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky with the goal to raise student awareness around ongoing global topics and global careers.
The 2019 topic focused on Human Rights Around the World. as U.S. Ambassador (Ret.), Jess Baily discussed his diplomatic career path which included three decades of building relationships, developing policy and programs, communicating strategically, and managing in cross-cultural environments. He has worked directly in Turkey, Iraq, and the Balkans responding to crises and complex challenges. Ambassador Bailey is committed to expanding young people’s interest and engagement in international affairs.
The students had the opportunity to “Speed Network” with local professionals in global careers, tour Northern Kentucky University’s campus, and participate in a Human Rights Activity with other high school students.

Global Chatter at Northern Kentucky University
Based on the largest discussion program on world affairs, Great Decisions. Hosted and prepared each year by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA), serves as the focal text for discussion groups across the country.
Global Chatter, our local speaker event provides background information and policy options for the most critical issues facing America each year. Resources provided by FPA are shown as experts from our area are selected to moderate on the topics for a group discussion.
Mass migration and the problems associated with it have directly abetted the rise of populist parties in Europe.
Opposing immigration was the prime driver of support for Brexit, an anti-American, anti-NATO and pro-Kremlin making their rise a matter of serious concern for the national security interests of the United States.
Art Meets World | Chinese Lanterns
Thank you to our Global Guide, Angel for presenting China to the entire third-grade class at Kenton Elementary.
The students learned all about the language, food, animals, and even had the opportunity to compare the Chinese government to the United States. To conclude the event the students were able to make their own Chinese Lanterns.
A sky lantern, also known as Kongming lantern or Chinese lantern, is a small hot air balloon made of paper, with an opening at the bottom where a small fire is suspended. Chinese lanterns are usually created with family and friends during the Chinese New Year!
Art Meets World | Rangoli
Our NEW Global Guide, Shraddha presented India to elementary students at John G Carlisle. Shraddha highlighted India’s languages, ethnicities, religions, and the art of rangoli. She talked about the significance of rangolis in festivals. Following the presentation, students made their own colorful and creative rangolis.
Rangoli is mainly made on the auspicious occasion of Diwali, the festival of lights, to welcome prosperity, health, and joy in one’s home. Made with colors and flow petals and decorated with lanterns and pots, rangoli is shared by all with fun, food, and music.

Global Chatter at Miami University
We were honored to host our Global Speaker, Jamie Grabert at Miami University Middletown as she discussed Media and Foreign Policy, a topic from the Great Decisions Program.
Jamie is a veteran journalist -turned marketer with 20 years in media with reporting, advertising and management experience ranging from small local newspapers to large multi-national publishing companies. Her portfolio, exceeding 10,000 published articles, features work published in the LA Times, The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal. She has also worked as a freelance marketing and public relations writer for a variety of industries. She has served as an advocate of the need for professional journalism and as well as a guest lecturer for several grassroots and non-profit organizations and Midwest colleges and universities. Jamie moved to Cincinnati almost 3 years ago to put her years of experience to work for marketing firm DeanHouston as Media Director, where she manages strategy, planning, and analytics for all print and digital advertising.
Nonprofit Event at Oak Hills High School
Our
Global Education Manager, Hannah Gerth attended Oak Hills Non-Profit Fair on Thursday morning hosting over 40 other NPOs in our local area. We were thrilled to be apart of this very important event impacting 2500 high school students at Oak Hills.
Oak Hills High School is an Academic Member of the World Affairs Council. As a member of our Global Ed Network, we design year-long academic enrichment and leadership opportunities for students and teachers to focus on cross-cultural experiences, global careers, and knowledge activities.

2019 Global Ed Conference
The 9th annual Global Education Conference is a collaborative, inclusive, world-wide community initiative involving students, educators, and organizations at all levels. Their activities are designed to significantly increase opportunities for connecting classrooms while supporting cultural awareness and recognition of diversity and educational access for all.
The free event took place entirely online around the clock during International Education Week.
