Mohamed Camara’s Global Guide Fellow Summer Reflection

This summer, we had an amazing Global Guide Fellow, Mohamed Camara, from Mali, Africa. Here, he writes about his experience with us, what he’s learned, and his inspiration moving forward!

My name is Mohamed Camara. I am from Mali and I have been living here for two years. I recently graduated from Aiken New Tech High with an Honor Diploma. My career interest is to be an U.S. Department of State Consular Officer and as my career progresses I hope to establish my own non-profit organization promoting peace in order to end the political crisis in Mali. My fellowship work site was at the World Affairs Council of Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky and I participated in Camp Global, partner program with Gulf Coast Diplomacy Council. After this, I’ll be attending the University of Cincinnati in the fall, majoring in International Affairs.

My experience at the World Affairs Council of Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky was one of the best and engaging experiences I have ever had in my entire life. At the World Affairs Council, I learned and developed how to be a leader in preparing a community, individually and collectively, to thrive in the actual global environment by promoting international understanding, education, engagement, and cooperation. For example, I created and taught lessons, engaging cultural activities, and projects for our local elementary students so they can learn more about our amazing world.

Also, I have had the opportunity to learn and experience how to collaborate and speak with diplomats while developing critical thinking. For example at Camp Global, every Wednesday, I internationally meet interns and U.S. Department of State Fellows from all around the world to discuss and practice diplomacy simulations involving hypothetical scenarios but deals with real world problems such as climate change.

Networking was my favorite part of the fellowship! –Why? — Because I networked with personalities who actually work for my career interest (which is the U.S. Department of State) and I’m actually making great steps to reach my goal, accompanied with their help. Conclusively, I really developed and gained self-management, time management, independence, leadership, networking, critical thinking, cultural awareness, technology skills, and promoting diversity skills, and I will apply them wherever I go to change the world.

Thank you,

– Mohamed
