SHORT TAKE: LANGUAGE LESSONS is a beautifully made and superbly acted story — about feeling lost and alone, about breaking down walls and sharing feelings, about blossoming friendship and platonic love — that does not wind up in the bedroom. This is a rare and refreshing approach in an industry where sexual activity is often considered necessary to hold viewers’ attention.
Here, we have two interesting people who discover each other and what really matters in life. The onscreen chemistry between Adam (Mark Duplass) and Cariño (Natalie Morales) is strong, sincere and believable, as is the developing relationship between their characters.
Directed by Natalie Morales, co-written by Morales and Duplass, with both providing charismatic and heartfelt performances, LANGUAGE LESSONS is a labor of love and an elegant gem in a sea of big-budget, predictable films flooding theatres and the Internet.
Best enjoyed on the big screen, join us for the film and discussion led by Alfonso Barnes and Sara Drabik on Thursday, October 27.
