Global Summer Camp Covington Story Time

During our time at Camp Covington, we met many students from diverse backgrounds.  The students showed tremendous curiosity with wanting to learn more about refugees and Uganda. When the students first came to Camp Covington they didn’t really know anything about Uganda or refugees.

They were excited to meet our Global Guide, Enock, and hear more about his life. They each received a signed copy of Enock’s published book. His book shared a story about his childhood and his experiences at the refugee camp in Uganda. By the end of our time together, the students across all of the schools learned more about cultural-awareness and perseverance. They shared in their reflections that they learned refugees are just like all of us.

One of the most memorable moments with the students at Camp Covington was seeing the look on their faces when we told them that they were going to receive a book from a real live author.

Here are some of their words from hearing that news:

“Oh, I can’t wait to tell my mom.”

“Wow, we met a real author!”

“I’m going to read this to my sister.”

“Really?!?”

“YAY!!!”

Global Education Program Background: Camp Covington is an annual summer program of the World Affairs Council. Staff will go into all 5 elementary schools for the week to explore the world. The Council invites a Global Guide Fellow, a local student from a different country, to share his or her story with the students. This summer, the Council partnered with illustrated memoirs to bring a student author into the classroom and continued its partnership with the Center for Great Neighborhoods.
