$8 – $10 Shoplifters is just such a film. Kore-Eda immerses us in the lives of throw-away children – victims of abandonment and physical abuse – taken in by a group of plain people living by their wits, bound by poverty, whose kindness is remarkable in light of their own uncertain circumstances.
And, he speaks to our intellectual curiosity and our emotions about what makes a family in a harsh world: The bonds of blood or the bonds of love and acceptance?
