Searching for Mr. Rugoff

September 7, 2021 @ 7:00 pm

☀  Searching for Mr. Rugoff … Tue Sep 7, 7 pm.
Q&A led by John Alberti.  Also available in the CWC Virtual Cinema

A fascinating look at contemporary American cinema history, told through the biography of Don Rugoff, the marketing genius with an eye for film who brought art house cinema into the American mainstream, and then disappeared.
Through his chain of New York theatres and distribution company, Rugoff introduced amazing films that blew us away back in the ’60s and ’70s, with a timelessness that holds for younger viewers seeing them in repertory screenings. You may recognize these titles (a partial list):
Monty Python and the Holy Grail … Seven Beauties … The Endless Summer … Z … Elvira Madigan … Putney Swope … Gimme Shelter … The Garden of the Finzi-Continis …  Marjoe … Scenes from a Marriage … Swept Away … Pumping Iron … Harlan County USA.
Rugoff championed filmmakers not well known in mainstream America, now regarded as masters of the craft (a partial list):  Shirley Clarke, François Truffaut, Milos Forman, Satyajit Ray, Robert Downey Sr., Marcel Ophüls, Costa-Gavras, the Maysles brothers, Vittorio De Sica, Ken Loach, Sarah Kernochan, Ingmar Bergman, Lina Wertmüller, Arthur Penn, James Ivory, Werner Herzog, Barbara Kopple, Nicolas Roeg, Terry Gilliam, Agnes Varda, Alain Resnais, and many more.

Producer-director Ira Deutchman, who spent years making this entertaining and highly informative documentary, has generously arranged for CWC to receive 100% of the ticket proceeds. Please join us.
