SUMMARY:Human Trafficking and Smuggling Course
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Kirill Boychenko \nAs opportunities for legal migration decrease and economic and security complications in countries of origin increase\, people are forced to migrate irregularly. In many cases\, they end up exploited for labour or sex. Demand for low skilled/low cost labour in the global north (along with well-established informal labour practices in destination and transit countries) as well as lack of information about legal migration channels result in migrants falling prey to smuggling and trafficking networks. \nThis e-learning course analyses the concepts of human trafficking and migrant smuggling while discussing various practical cases from around the globe. It focuses on existing policies and modalities of prevention\, protection and prosecution\, including victim identification\, national/trans-national referral mechanisms and best practices in combating these crimes while addressing the needs of survivors.

SUMMARY:The 2018 Midwest Regional Sustainability Summit
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, the Midwest Regional Sustainability Summit will continue to explore new and promising areas of environmental sustainability\, while also taking a deeper look at the issue of resilience. We will explore how other regions across the nation are adapting to climate change and other environmental challenges and those in the process of creating resilient cities. To underscore this point\, the keynote speaker this year is Katharine Hayhoe. Hayhoe is a prominent climate scientist experienced in untangling the complex science and tackling many long-held misconceptions about global warming. Director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University\, Hayhoe current focus is on modeling regional to local impacts of climate change\, and how we can fix this together using many of the solutions already in our backyards. \nFeaturing keynote address from Katharine Hayhoe\, an accomplished atmospheric scientist who studies climate change and why it matters to us here and now. A remarkable communicator\, Katharine has been recognized by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
