SUMMARY:GREAT DECISIONS : The Rise of Populism in Europe
DESCRIPTION:The Rise of Populism in Europe  \nBy James Kirchick \nMass migration and the problems associated with it have directly abetted the rise of populist parties in Europe. Opposition to immigration was the prime driver of support for Brexit\, it brought a far-right party to the German Bundestag for the first time since the 1950s\, and propelled Marine Le Pen to win a third of the vote in the French presidential election. In addition to calling for stronger borders\, however\, these parties are invariably illiberal\, anti-American\, anti-NATO and pro-Kremlin\, making their rise a matter of serious concern for the national security interests of the United States. \nThis program will be held in the Chapel at St. John’s UU Church\, 320 Resor Ave.\, Clifton\, from 12:45 – 2:15 p.m. Brown bag lunches are welcome to be eaten while we watch the DVD together before the discussion. \nIf you did not purchase a briefing book in the fall and would like to do the same background reading as many others in the group\, you can order one from the Foreign Policy Association\, www.fpa.org. If not\, try to do some research on the topic before coming.  No registration is necessary.

SUMMARY:SOTENI's Celebration of Hope
DESCRIPTION:SOTENI’s Celebration of Hope on March 1st\, 2019 from 5:30 PM – 9:30 PM at The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati\, Ohio. \nThe event will celebrate SOTENI’s mission and our vision for a brighter future for the people and villages of rural Kenya affected by HIV/AIDS. Support from community members like you is captured in the African philosophy of Ubuntu –  often translated as “I am because You are”. Ubuntu manifests itself through human acts of generosity\, openness\, cooperation\, and community.  We look forward to joining together on March 1st and beyond to celebrate our connectedness to one another through compassion\, courage\, and community. \nAmbassador Pamela E. Bridgewater will be us on March 1st\, sharing stories from her extraordinary career as an ambassador appointed by Presidents Bill Clinton\, George W. Bush\, and Barack Obama. She was the first African-American woman appointed Consul General at Durban\, from 1993 to 1996\, where she worked with Nelson Mandela during the transition of South Africa away from apartheid. \nThe night will conclude with tours of the special exhibition\, “Mandela—Journey to Ubuntu” in its last night at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. This exhibition helps us understand the role of forgiveness\, leadership\, truth\, and sacrifice play in overcoming the challenges we face in society today. \nAdmission also includes hors d’oeuvres by Elegant Fare. Guests over 21 will enjoy an open bar during the welcome reception & immediately following the program\, until 8:30 PM. \nFor tickets\, please visit here. \n  \n
