SUMMARY:Law and Business in Sub-Saharan Africa
DESCRIPTION:With a rapidly developing economy\, growing population\, and rising standard of living\, Sub-Saharan Africa increasingly is attracting attention as a target for investment and business development. Former Ambassador Tom McDonald\, a partner in the Vorys Sater Seymour and Pease LLP Washington\, D.C.\, office\, will present on best practices for doing law and business in Africa based on his many years of experience in the region. McDonald served as U.S. Ambassador to Zimbabwe from 1997–2001 and currently leads Vorys’ administrative and regulatory law\, and governmental policy practice. McDonald will discuss issues of rule of law\, enforceability of contracts\, corruption\, and access to government officials. John Pinney\, partner at Graydon Head & Ritchey LLP and adjunct professor at UC College of Law\, will offer an introduction to international arbitration in Sub-Saharan Africa as a means to enforce contract rights and approach dispute resolution matters. Pinney recently trained attorneys in Africa. Additional guest speakers include University of Cincinnati College of Law LLM attorney students: Festus Adewopo (Nigeria)\, president and founder of the Nigerian NGO You and I For Development Initiative; Olukemi Hambolu (Nigeria)\, partner at Grace-Field Solicitors in Lagos; and Kitso Matlhape (Botswana)\, volunteer with The Voice of a Child & Youth Engagement NGO and recipient of the first LLM Human Rights Fellowship. \nRegister Here.

DESCRIPTION:Given the leadership role that the United States continues to play in the world\, our council brings to you a series of 3 events looking at “International Institutions Under Strain Post WWII Era.” Our objective is for the local community to gain deeper insights into foreign policy and affairs being discussed. It is also important to understand how the institution’s challenges can impact the everyday lives of American citizens. \nThis series highlights the particular threats and future direction of three powerful international institutions: UN\, WTO\, & NATO. \n\nDan Ikenson is director of Cato’s Herbert A. Stiefel Center for Trade Policy Studies\, where he coordinates and conducts research on all manner of international trade and investment policy. \nIkenson has been involved in international trade since 1990. Before joining the Cato Institute in 2000\, he was director of international trade planning for an international accounting and business advisory firm. In 1997 he cofounded and was a principal at an international trade consulting firm in Washington\,.and from 1990 to 1997 he was a trade policy and antidumping analyst at a few international trade law practices.
