SUMMARY:Tempest-Tossed: Borders and Immigration - Global Leaders Online Program (High School Students)
DESCRIPTION:Week 4 (July 27-31): The devastation of the Second World War left seven to eleven million people searching for a new home; today there are over 70 million refugees or displaced people worldwide. Despite being signatories to the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and its promise of freedom of movement\, today’s economic powers nonetheless vacillate between open\, semi-open\, and closed borders in their approaches to immigration from developing nations. Meanwhile\, San Diego lies a stone’s throw from the world’s second-busiest land-border crossing. In this session\, students will reflect on the challenges and opportunities posed by ever-increasing global migration and the ways in which state\, international\, and non-governmental organizations respond.

Threading connections between care for the world and the need for resources in our own background\, Betsy Baldwin (Director of the Humanitarian Response Team)\, Cindy Breilh (Executive Director of U.S. Programs)\, and Joe DiCarlo (Global Ambassador and member of WorldOregon’s Board of Advisors)\, share how Medical Teams International has pivoted with the rise of COVID-19 to address innovative approaches to rural public health in Oregon and Washington and across the globe in places like Bangladesh and Guatemala\, among other locales.
