SUMMARY:Society and Cyberthreats: Risks to National Security in a Global Economy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Virtual Event on Wednesday\, October 19th at 6:30 PM via Zoom Webinar\, Society and Cyberthreats: Risks to National Security in a Global Economy. \nToday\, we transact vast amounts of data through smart-devices for work\, home life\, and everything in between.  Data is the ‘new oil’ and cybersecurity has evolved into a primary focus for malicious actors—some of whom are foreign State actors and often very well organized\, coordinated\, with the objective of achieving strategic outcomes.  To better understand this landscape of cyberthreats\, we bring together this panel discussion on Society and Cyberthreats to examine our country’s cyber strategies. \nWe are joined by Dr. Harknett and Ms. Guider to start by asking some simple questions to better understand Cyberthreats in our daily lives beyond our mere distant awareness about coercion\, militarized crisis\, and war:  \n\nIs cybersecurity more of a technology or people problem? \nHow have the nature of cybersecurity threats changed in the recent decade(s)?\nHow has the training/education curriculum evolved in response to the changing global cybersecurity threats?\n\nGuest Panelists: \nKathy Guider\, Vice President Veracity IIR\, retired FBI Special Agent \nRichard Harknett\, PhD\, University of Cincinnati\, Professor & Director\, School of Public and International Affairs (SPIC)\, Co-Director\, Ohio Cyber Range Institute(OCRI)\, Chair\, Center for Cyber Strategy and Policy (CCSP)

SUMMARY:Open Data: Promise and Peril in Modern Data Flows Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:Every day\, information flows at rates and quantities that are difficult for the human mind to comprehend. Within this vastness of data exist two competing concepts:  \n\nData should be proprietary and guarded\, \nData should be open and publicly available. \n\nIt is generally believed that data related to personal financial and medical data should be private and secure\, while it may be important for items such as NASA and SEC data to be open and publicly available. There can be gaps in security for both types.  Those gaps are exploited by opportunists engaging unknowing targets. When technology outpaces oversight\, it can create friction between the parties involved.  It can also bring opportunities for good.  \n\nWhat happens when intellectual property rights impede research? \nHow do the strategies used by large corporations and individuals vary when it comes to making use of open data and where does each have a competitive advantage?\nWhat are governments doing to confront these new challenges\, and do they play by the same rules?\nHow do companies create value for their customers by sharing data?\n\nJoin us as we dive into this broad topic with our panel of three technology leaders: \n\nJason Barkeloo\, Founder and CEO\, Open Therapeutics\nDebbie Kramer\, Sr. Director – Privacy\, The Kroger Co.\nMichael Wilhite\, VP Enterprise Standards\, 84.51°

SUMMARY:Japan America Community Night with FC Cincinnati
DESCRIPTION:Let’s show our support for FC Cincinnati and their powerful Japanese striker\, Yuya Kubo\, currently the only Japanese (and our only known-Asian) MLS player in the United States. \nTake advantage of discounted tickets for this event\, courtesy FC Cincinnati\, in one of several sections of TQL Stadium reserved for JASGC members\, friends\, and anyone who wishes to purchase tickets via this link. \nUse code JACN22 for the discount.  \n(This discount is available through May 9 only. For tickets after that date\, please contact Brandon Jones at FC Cincinnati.) \nWe are pleased to be able to offer this event in May\, during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. According to Wikipedia\, the US Congress chose the month of May for two reasons: On May 7\, 1843\, the first Japanese immigrant arrived in the United States. And more than two decades later\, on May 10\, 1869\, the “Golden Spike” was driven into the First Transcontinental Railroad\, which made heavy use of Chinese labor. Since its inception\, awareness of AAPI Heritage Month has grown considerably\, with more events taking place in Greater Cincinnati this year than ever before.

DESCRIPTION:Denny Kato shares his family’s living legacy of the Japanese internment camps in WWII.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nAs a schoolboy\, nobody believed Dennis Kato when he told them that his father’s parents and their families had been forced into incarceration camps simply because they were of Japanese descent. SUMMARY:DEMOCRACY & THE PRESS
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US FOR DEMOCRACY & THE PRESS \nwith AP photojournalists in conversation about how the free press plays an essential role in sustaining an informed democracy \n\nMarch 3\, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.\nNKU’s Griffin Hall\, admission is free – or attend virtually\nRSVP by CLICKING HERE\nPresented with support from Kentucky Humanities\n\nCommunity friends\, \nEven as democracy is threatened in the world\, it has been under fire\, too\, in our own nation. On May 25\, 2020\, George Floyd was killed in police custody – awakening national protests. On Jan. 6\, 2021\, the nation’s Capitol was stormed by a mob that wanted to overturn a presidential election. \nCovering both was the Associated Press\, the stalwart news service that provides coverage of events in our home communities\, in the nation and around the world. As I write this\, AP reporters and photographers are in Ukraine\, covering the outbreak of a war. \nNext week\, on Thursday\, March 3\, at 6 p.m.\, three AP photojournalists who have been in the thick of the events of the past few years\, will visit Northern Kentucky University to talk about their work. The powerful images have helped to tell the story of America in our times. \nThe three are: \n\nKim Johnson Flodin\, a deputy news directors based in Chicago\, and one of AP’s photo editors who direct coverage.\nJulio Cortez\, staff photographer\, and part of the 2021 Pulitzer Prize winning team of AP photographers – his widely published photo taken on the night of May 28 in riot-torn Minneapolis shows a lone\, silhouetted protester running with an upside-down American flag past a burning liquor store.\nAndrew Harnik\, staff photographer\, is based in Washington\, DC\, and was among the AP team who covered the storming of the Capitol. His work has taken him around the world with top U.S. diplomats and all over the country with presidents and candidates for president.

SUMMARY:Cincinnati World Cinema - Women on the Edge
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 11 through Sunday\, June 13 at the Garfield\nAlso online in the CWC Virtual Cinema\nNINA WU  103 min\, Taiwan/Myanmar\, R\, in Mandarin with English subs.\nTHE COLUMNIST  85 min\, The Netherlands\, R\, in Dutch with English subs. \nWe’re proud to present two unusual international films offering the stories of two very different women pushed over the edge by toxic environments affecting not only their careers\, but their dignity\, sanity and safety. \nThe over-the-top treatment in THE COLUMNIST\, set in the realm of social media and publishing\, provides a subversively comedic take on a person who goes too far in pursuit of retribution. As its Cannes and NYT Critic’s Pick credentials suggest\, NINA WU is a more serious work\, a searing indictment of systemic exploitation in the film industry. \nThe underlying theme is exploitation and both films examine the ways these women try to understand and deal with their experiences as they become immersed in stressful situations. Both offer ample ground for post-film discussion. \nThe weekend screenings open with NINA WU\, Friday June 11 at 7 pm\, which repeats on Saturday June 12 at 4 pm. THE COLUMNIST screens Saturday June 12 at 7 pm and repeats on Sunday June 13 at 4 pm. Single tickets are $10 for all screenings\, with a discount $16 double-bill option on Saturday. Trailers\, details\, dates/times and tickets:\nTHE COLUMNIST       NINA WU \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n ENCORE SCREENING – THE FALL\nJune Date TBA \nLast weekend’s screenings of THE FALL sold out and we’ve had requests for an additional showing. If you missed this terrific film\, or want to see it again\, we are looking to choose from June 18-19-20. Let us know the best dates for you:  Send us your date/time preferences.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  IN THE CWC VIRTUAL CINEMA: \nThe Columnist\, opens May 28\, https://cincyworldcinema.org/the-columnist/.  85 min\, The Netherlands\, R\, in Dutch with English subs. \nNina Wu\, opens May 28\, https://cincyworldcinema.org/nina-wu/.  Festival de Cannes\, Official Selection Un Certain Regard. Double-thanks to all who thoughtfully added to the Tip Jar when ordering – it really helps! We will continue the hybrid approach with in-person screenings at the Garfield and online screenings via our Virtual Cinema. \nWith the Ohio vaccination rate at 39%\, CWC will not abolish safety measures just yet but will adjust as things improve. For June\, we have increased Garfield capacity from 25% to 50% using two-seat in-row distancing with seats available in every row\, staggered when possible. \nAs most ticket purchases are pairs sprinkled with singles\, actually capacity will likely be closer to 40%. We do request that in-person attendees have completed the vaccine process and also request the use of masks in common areas. While Ohio is jumping into high gear full-open\, we will continue to keep patron comfort level and safety as our top priority. \nThanks again & see you soon\,\nTim
