SUMMARY:Cincinnati World Cinema - Women on the Edge
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 11 through Sunday\, June 13 at the Garfield\nAlso online in the CWC Virtual Cinema\nNINA WU  103 min\, Taiwan/Myanmar\, R\, in Mandarin with English subs.\nTHE COLUMNIST  85 min\, The Netherlands\, R\, in Dutch with English subs. \nWe’re proud to present two unusual international films offering the stories of two very different women pushed over the edge by toxic environments affecting not only their careers\, but their dignity\, sanity and safety. \nThe over-the-top treatment in THE COLUMNIST\, set in the realm of social media and publishing\, provides a subversively comedic take on a person who goes too far in pursuit of retribution. As its Cannes and NYT Critic’s Pick credentials suggest\, NINA WU is a more serious work\, a searing indictment of systemic exploitation in the film industry. \nThe underlying theme is exploitation and both films examine the ways these women try to understand and deal with their experiences as they become immersed in stressful situations. Both offer ample ground for post-film discussion. \nThe weekend screenings open with NINA WU\, Friday June 11 at 7 pm\, which repeats on Saturday June 12 at 4 pm. THE COLUMNIST screens Saturday June 12 at 7 pm and repeats on Sunday June 13 at 4 pm. Single tickets are $10 for all screenings\, with a discount $16 double-bill option on Saturday. Trailers\, details\, dates/times and tickets:\nTHE COLUMNIST       NINA WU \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n ENCORE SCREENING – THE FALL\nJune Date TBA \nLast weekend’s screenings of THE FALL sold out and we’ve had requests for an additional showing. If you missed this terrific film\, or want to see it again\, we are looking to choose from June 18-19-20. Let us know the best dates for you:  Send us your date/time preferences.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  IN THE CWC VIRTUAL CINEMA: \nThe Columnist\, opens May 28\, https://cincyworldcinema.org/the-columnist/.  85 min\, The Netherlands\, R\, in Dutch with English subs. \nNina Wu\, opens May 28\, https://cincyworldcinema.org/nina-wu/.  Festival de Cannes\, Official Selection Un Certain Regard. NYT Critic’s Pick. 103 min\, Taiwan/Myanmar\, R\, in Mandarin with English subs. \nAbout Endlessness\, https://cincyworldcinema.org/about-endlessness/.  Winner\, Silver Bear\, Venice; New York Times Critic’s Pick. 78 min\, Sweden/Norway/Germany\, NR\, in Swedish with English subs. \nThe Woman Who Loves Giraffes\, held over\, https://cincyworldcinema.org/the-woman-who-loves-giraffes/.\n83 min\, Canada/USA/South Africa\, Documentary\, NR\, in English.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“How to watch” and tech info: Virtual Cinema FAQ.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n \nThank you to everyone who attended the first five weekends at the reopened Garfield Theatre\, and welcome to the new virtual viewers who’ve joined the CWC film family. Double-thanks to all who thoughtfully added to the Tip Jar when ordering – it really helps! We will continue the hybrid approach with in-person screenings at the Garfield and online screenings via our Virtual Cinema. \nWith the Ohio vaccination rate at 39%\, CWC will not abolish safety measures just yet but will adjust as things improve. For June\, we have increased Garfield capacity from 25% to 50% using two-seat in-row distancing with seats available in every row\, staggered when possible. \nAs most ticket purchases are pairs sprinkled with singles\, actually capacity will likely be closer to 40%. We do request that in-person attendees have completed the vaccine process and also request the use of masks in common areas. While Ohio is jumping into high gear full-open\, we will continue to keep patron comfort level and safety as our top priority. \nThanks again & see you soon\,\nTim

SUMMARY:Listening for the Heartbeat of Iran
DESCRIPTION:Tara Kangarlou will be discussing the role of media and society in the U.S. and Iran\, and her insights about the Iranian people and culture as the western media seems to highlight only a slim view of this country of 80 million people. Tara will be interviewed by Todd Schwartz\, former Foreign Service officer with the United States and current Executive Director with the European American Chamber of Commerce Cincinnati.  \nMore about Tara Kangarlou: She is an award-winning journalist who has reported\, written\, and produced breaking news\, investigative pieces\, and broadcast stories for NBC-LA\, CNN\, CNN International and Al Jazeera America. Her writing and reporting has also appeared in digital news outlets such as TIME\, Vanity Fair\, Huffington Post\, and Al Monitor. She previously served as a fellow at the East West Institute\, is a contributor to Al Jazeera\, and a frequent commentator on various news outlets covering the MENA region and humanitarian issues worldwide. \nIn 2015\, she led Al Jazeera America’s team with unprecedented access to report from inside Iran during the nuclear negotiations. In recent years\, she has reported extensively from the Syrian border regions of Lebanon\, Turkey and Jordan covering issues that impact Syrian refugees\, host countries\, and the Middle East at large. In 2016\, she founded Art of Hope\, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the psychosocial and mental health needs of refugees in Lebanon. \nHer forthcoming book\, The Heartbeat of Iran will be released on June 1st\, and captures the heart and soul of a country that’s often seen through news headlines and a political fog that blurs the reality of life for millions of Iranians inside the country. Each chapter is an incredibly nuanced\, textured\, and intimate journey into the diversity of beliefs\, struggles\, and complexities of life in today’s Iran – all told through the real stories of its people. Tara was born and raised in Tehran and is fully bilingual in English and Farsi. \nYou can follow Tara at the handles below and pre-order her forthcoming book! \nTwitter: @TaraKangarlou\nLinkedIn: TaraKangarlou\nInstagram: @TaraKangarlou\nWebsite: TaraKangarlou.com\nFacebook: TaraKangarlouJournalist\nBook Link: The Heartbeat of Iran\n\n\nMore about Todd Schwartz:He retired from the Foreign Service of the United States in September 2015 with the personal rank of Counselor (roughly equivalent to Brigadier General). \nMr. Schwartz joined the State Department as a Foreign Service Officer in 1987.
