DESCRIPTION:The San Diego Diplomacy Council is proud to offer a unique discussion on Vaccine Diplomacy\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nIn recognition of the rising importance of vaccine diplomacy in the current climate\, the San Diego Diplomacy Council is proud to offer a unique discussion with Dr. Yanzhong Huang\, a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations and professor and the director for global health studies at Seton Hall University’s School of Diplomacy and International Relations. This event will take place on Zoom at 11 AM PST on May 18th\, 2021 as part of our E-Talk About series. \nVaccine diplomacy is among the most important foreign policy tools for countries seeking to shape their post-COVID international standings. Major powers including the People’s Republic of China\, India\, Russia\, and the United States have emerged as contenders in this quest. How do these countries differ in their motivations\, patterns\, and successes in vaccine diplomacy? Will their efforts encourage equitable global vaccine access or merely result in geopolitical frictions? \nDr. Huang is the founding editor of Global Health Governance: The Scholarly Journal for the New Health Security Paradigm. He has written extensively on China and global health in outlets including Foreign Affairs\, Foreign Policy\, the New York Times\, and the Washington Post. In 2006\, he coauthored the first scholarly article that systematically examined China’s soft power. He is the author of Toxic Politics: China’s Environmental Health Crisis and its Challenge to the Chinese State (Cambridge 2020) and Governing Health in Contemporary China (Routledge 2013). He has testified before congressional committees many times and is regularly consulted by major media outlets\, the private sector\, and governmental and non-governmental organizations on global health issues and China. He is an expert adviser of the CSIS Commission on Strengthening America’s Health Security\, where he chairs the China task force. In 2012\, he was listed by InsideJersey magazine as one of the “20 Brainiest People in New Jersey.” \n  \nThe San Diego Diplomacy Council is honored to host Dr. Yanzhong Huang and the San Diego Diplomacy Council to discuss these important issues. \n\n\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Tara Kangarlou will be discussing the role of media and society in the U.S. and Iran\, and her insights about the Iranian people and culture as the western media seems to highlight only a slim view of this country of 80 million people. Tara will be interviewed by Todd Schwartz\, former Foreign Service officer with the United States and current Executive Director with the European American Chamber of Commerce Cincinnati.  \nMore about Tara Kangarlou: She is an award-winning journalist who has reported\, written\, and produced breaking news\, investigative pieces\, and broadcast stories for NBC-LA\, CNN\, CNN International and Al Jazeera America. Her writing and reporting has also appeared in digital news outlets such as TIME\, Vanity Fair\, Huffington Post\, and Al Monitor. She previously served as a fellow at the East West Institute\, is a contributor to Al Jazeera\, and a frequent commentator on various news outlets covering the MENA region and humanitarian issues worldwide. \nIn 2015\, she led Al Jazeera America’s team with unprecedented access to report from inside Iran during the nuclear negotiations. In recent years\, she has reported extensively from the Syrian border regions of Lebanon\, Turkey and Jordan covering issues that impact Syrian refugees\, host countries\, and the Middle East at large. In 2016\, she founded Art of Hope\, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the psychosocial and mental health needs of refugees in Lebanon. \nHer forthcoming book\, The Heartbeat of Iran will be released on June 1st\, and captures the heart and soul of a country that’s often seen through news headlines and a political fog that blurs the reality of life for millions of Iranians inside the country. Each chapter is an incredibly nuanced\, textured\, and intimate journey into the diversity of beliefs\, struggles\, and complexities of life in today’s Iran – all told through the real stories of its people. His overseas postings included Germany\, Saudi Arabia\, Tunisia\, Qatar\, the Philippines\, Kuwait (Counselor for Economic Affairs)\, Canada (Principal Officer in Winnipeg\, Manitoba)\, and Iraq (Counselor for Economic Affairs). His assignments in Washington have included tours as Director for the Office of Iraq Economic Affairs\, Director of the Office of Iran Affairs\, and as an assessor with the Board of Examiners for the Foreign Service. He received numerous awards throughout his career\, including three Superior Honor Awards\, six Meritorious Honor Awards\, and the Secretary’s Career Achievement Award. \nMr. Schwartz earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Economics at the Richard T. Farmer School of Business at Miami University in Oxford\, Ohio. A father of four\, he is married to the former Nancy Dye Sunderland of Dayton\, Ohio.
