From altering supply chains\, to collapsing oil prices\, to mixing virtual and physical presence in the workplace\, this discussion will examine the potential environmental impacts of how Americans are rethinking trade\, work\, and travel in the post-pandemic world. \nTheresa Sabonis-Helf is the Inaugural Chair of the Science\, Technology and International Affairs concentration in the Master’s Degree program at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service.  Prior to joining Georgetown\, she was a Professor of National Security Strategy at the National War College in Washington DC.  She has lived and worked in seven countries of the Former USSR\, has assisted two nations with the development of their first National Security Strategies\, and has co-edited two volumes on Central Asia’s political and economic transition.  She has also published and lectured extensively on energy security\, climate change policies\, post-Soviet energy and environmental issues\, regional water politics\, regional trade and transit\, and the politics of electricity.  She is a frequent advisor to the US Department of State and USAID and is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

DESCRIPTION:In a world ravaged by a global pandemic\, stay at home orders\, quarantine\, and social distancing practices are the new normal. Human movement around the globe has come to an almost screeching halt. However\, while national governments threaten the complete suspension of migration\, preventing people from moving across borders is not as obvious of a solution as it may seem\, nor as beneficial. \nAs Covid-19 continues to spread across the world\, with cases continuing to rise\, supply chains around the globe are beginning to take a hit. Most notably the food supply chain is beginning to strain. The meatpacking industry\, unable to accommodate proper social distancing protocol\, is experiencing a severe hit to their workforce. Farmers and agricultural businesses are taking to the fields after the winter season and need an abundance of able-bodied workers. But who typically fills these roles? Well according to the Department of Agriculture about half the country’s field hands\, more than a million workers\, are undocumented immigrants. \nWith administrations pushing for decreased migration across borders and the food industry pushing for more workers\, where does that leave the undocumented immigrant? Join us on June 25th with Mexican border correspondent and author\, Alfredo Corchado to take a deeper look at this issue\, the impact on our food supply\, and what it actually means to be an essential worker. \n  \nThis is a Zoom Webinar event. M.D. Dr. Dekleva will give a brief presentation\, and then engage with attendees for Q&A. This 15-20 minute lecture will take place over Zoom on Tuesday\, March 31 from 5-6 pm Pacific Time. \nDr. Kenneth Dekleva is currently an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Peter J. O’Donnell Brain Inst.\, UT Southwestern Medical Center\, Dallas\, TX\, where he holds the McKenzie Foundation I Chair in Psychiatry and is Director\, Psychiatry-Medicine Integration. \nDuring 2002-2016\, he served as a Regional Medical Officer/Psychiatrist with the U.S. Department of State\, retiring at the rank of Minister-Counselor.  He served in Moscow\, New Delhi\, Mexico City\, Vienna\, London\, and did a tour in Washington DC as Director of Mental-Health Services [world-wide] during 2013-2015. His experience both overseas (during SARS and H1N1) as well as in Washington DC (during Ebola) included working with medical colleagues in coordinating the behavioral-health response to such epidemics/pandemics.  Since 2016\, he has published and lectured extensively in the field of leadership psychology\, focusing upon analyses of world leaders for national security purposes.  He is board-certified in psychiatry and has an extensive background in integrated care\, management consultation\, behavioral-health support to elite teams\, and forensic psychiatry.

It is also important to understand how the institution’s challenges can impact the everyday lives of American citizens. \nThis series highlights the particular threats and future direction of three powerful international institutions: UN\, WTO\, & NATO. \n\nConstanze Stelzenmüller\, an expert on German\, European\, and transatlantic foreign and security policy and strategy\, is the inaugural Robert Bosch senior fellow in the Center on the United States and Europe at Brookings. \nStelzenmüller is a governor of the Ditchley Foundation and a fellow of the Royal Swedish Society for War Sciences. She has worked in Germany and the United States\, and speaks English\, French\, German\, and Spanish.
