SUMMARY:The State of Human Rights in North Korea | KEI Livestream Program
DESCRIPTION:The Korea Economic Institute of America\, WACA partner and co-sponsor of WACA’s Future of Korea grant program\, will host a livestream panel discussion on “The State of Human Rights in North Korea\,” featuring:\n\n\nAmbassador Robert King\, former U.S. Special Envoy for North Korea Human Rights\, Non-Resident Fellow at the Korea Economic Institute of America\nGreg Scarlatoiu\, Executive Director of the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea\nMark Tokola\, Moderator\, Vice President of the Korea Economic Institute of America\n\n\nThe State Department’s 2019 Human Rights Report continues to be as tough in its language on North Korean human rights violations as were its 2018 and 2017 reports. Along with the February 25\, 2020 report of the United Nations Human Rights Council and the Korea Institute for National Unification’s 2019 White Paper on Human Rights in North Korea\, there is ample recent documentation showing the continuing abysmal state of human rights in Kim Jong-un’s North Korea.\n\nThis event will be livestreamed on Zoom with an interactive Q&A session\, during which you will be able to ask a question of the speakers by using the Zoom Q&A function.\n\nPlease RSVP to receive the webinar link on the day of the event.

SUMMARY:Limits to Internet Growth | Livestream
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT WILL NOW BE LIVE STREAMED. \nTo access the link\, please email admin@sfcir.org to register. \nThe Internet is the largest thing that humanity has built. A Huawei consultant predicts that by 2030\, communications technologies could consume 51% of global electricity and emit 23% of greenhouse gas emissions. And yet\, the Internet’s footprint remains largely invisible and unregulated. Katie Singer will report on the Internet’s main energy guzzlers and some of the toxic waste-emitting supply chains of each smartphone’s 1000+ substances. She’ll also spell out how manufacturers\, service providers\, policy makers and individuals can each do their part to reduce the Internet’s footprint. \nA long-time resident of Santa Fe\, writer Katie Singer spoke about the Internet’s footprint on a panel with the climatologist Dr. James Hansen and at the United Nation’s 2018 Forum on Science\, Technology & Innovation. Visit www.ourweb.tech for more info.

SUMMARY:COVID-19 | Know Now Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Register now for WACA’s KNOW NOW conference call Thursday\, March 26\, at 2:00-2:30 PM ET\, featuring Dr. Jonathan Quick\, Senior Fellow at Management Sciences for Health\, on COVID-19 and global epidemics. As the book says\, “Somewhere in nature\, a killer virus is boiling up in the bloodstream of a bird\, bat\, monkey\, or pig\, preparing to jump to a human being. This not-yet-detected germ has the potential to wipe out millions of lives over a matter of weeks or months.” Join Dr. Quick and Mary Yntema to discuss what has changed since his Great Decisions talk\, how effective local and global efforts have been in combating COVID-19\, and what we can expect in the coming weeks and months.

SUMMARY:GREAT DECISIONS : Cyber Conflict and Geopolitics
DESCRIPTION:Cyber Conflict and Geopolitics  \nBy Richard Andres \nCyber conflict is a new and continually developing threat\, which can include foreign interference in elections\, industrial sabotage\, and attacks on infrastructure. Russia has been accused of interfering in the 2016 presidential elections in the United States and China is highly committed to using cyberspace as a tool of national policy. Dealing with cyber conflict will require new ways of looking at 21st-century warfare. Is the United States prepared to respond to such threats? \nThis program will be held in the Chapel at St. John’s UU Church\, 320 Resor Ave.\, Clifton\, from 12:45 – 2:15 p.m.Brown bag lunches are welcome to be eaten while we watch the DVD together before the discussion. \nIf you did not purchase a briefing book in the fall and would like to do the same background reading as many others in the group\, you can order one from the Foreign Policy Association\, www.fpa.org. If not\, try to do some research on the topic before coming.  No registration is necessary.

SUMMARY:GREAT DECISIONS : Decoding U.S.-China Trade
DESCRIPTION:Decoding U.S.-China Trade  \nBy Jeremy Haft \nThough arguably the most advanced economy in the world\, the United States still uses centuries-old numbers to measure trade.  These antique numbers mangle understanding of the U.S.-China trade relationship\, shrinking America’s true economic size and competitiveness while swelling China’s.  Bad numbers give rise to bad policies that ultimately kill U.S. jobs and cede market share to China.  What other tools can the United States employ to counter China’s unfair trade practices?  There are several available\, yet they remain mostly unused.  \nThis program will be held in the Chapel at St. John’s UU Church\, 320 Resor Ave.\, Clifton\, from 12:45 – 2:15 p.m. Brown bag lunches are welcome to be eaten while we watch the DVD together before the discussion. \nIf you did not purchase a briefing book in the fall and would like to do the same background reading as many others in the group\, you can order one from the Foreign Policy Association\, www.fpa.org.
