SUMMARY:Tempest-Tossed: Borders and Immigration - Global Leaders Online Program (High School Students)
DESCRIPTION:Week 4 (July 27-31): The devastation of the Second World War left seven to eleven million people searching for a new home; today there are over 70 million refugees or displaced people worldwide. Despite being signatories to the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and its promise of freedom of movement\, today’s economic powers nonetheless vacillate between open\, semi-open\, and closed borders in their approaches to immigration from developing nations. Meanwhile\, San Diego lies a stone’s throw from the world’s second-busiest land-border crossing. In this session\, students will reflect on the challenges and opportunities posed by ever-increasing global migration and the ways in which state\, international\, and non-governmental organizations respond.

SUMMARY:"Making Sense of a World in Crisis -- Through the Eyes of a Foreign Policy Expert"
DESCRIPTION:The World: A Conversation with Dr. Richard Haass\,\nPresident of the Council on Foreign Relations\n\n\nModerated by Dr. Richard Downie\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“This is a critical time to understand what is taking place in the world\, why it is taking place\, and how it will affect our lives\,” writes Richard N. Haass\, president of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)\, in his latest book\, The World: A Brief Introduction. The book provides anyone\, expert and non-expert alike\, with the essential background and building blocks they need to make sense of the global era we live in\, in which what happens thousands of miles away can affect our lives.\n\nGlobal literacy—knowing how the world works—is essential\, Haass argues\, “because we live in a time in which what goes on outside a country matters a great deal. Borders are not impermeable. The United States is bordered by two oceans\, but oceans are not moats. For better and for worse\, the so-called Vegas rule—what happens there stays there—does not apply in today’s global world.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs the global spread of the novel coronavirus has shown\, “What begins at the local level can quickly become global\,” writes Haass. This time it is COVID-19. Next time it could be another infectious disease from a different corner of the world\, a group of terrorists or cyber-warriors dedicated to attacking us\, or a natural disaster caused by climate change. This is the new normal of the twenty-first century—one defined by\nglobalization.\n\n“While it is impossible to predict what the next crisis will be or where it will originate\, we can be sure it will come\, and those who read The World: A Brief Introduction will have what they need to understand its basics and the principal choices for how to respond\,” said Haass.

SUMMARY:Immigration\, COVID-19\, and the U.S. Economy with Author Alfredo Corchado
DESCRIPTION:In a world ravaged by a global pandemic\, stay at home orders\, quarantine\, and social distancing practices are the new normal. Human movement around the globe has come to an almost screeching halt. However\, while national governments threaten the complete suspension of migration\, preventing people from moving across borders is not as obvious of a solution as it may seem\, nor as beneficial. \nAs Covid-19 continues to spread across the world\, with cases continuing to rise\, supply chains around the globe are beginning to take a hit. Most notably the food supply chain is beginning to strain. The meatpacking industry\, unable to accommodate proper social distancing protocol\, is experiencing a severe hit to their workforce. Farmers and agricultural businesses are taking to the fields after the winter season and need an abundance of able-bodied workers. But who typically fills these roles? Well according to the Department of Agriculture about half the country’s field hands\, more than a million workers\, are undocumented immigrants. \nWith administrations pushing for decreased migration across borders and the food industry pushing for more workers\, where does that leave the undocumented immigrant? Join us on June 25th with Mexican border correspondent and author\, Alfredo Corchado to take a deeper look at this issue\, the impact on our food supply\, and what it actually means to be an essential worker. \n  \nThis is a Zoom Webinar event. The event will take place from 12-1 p.m. EST on June 25\, 2020. The link will be sent to registrants in advance of the event. Please be sure to provide a valid email address with your registration.

SUMMARY:What's the New Normal for Air Travel? Ask the Experts from CVG & SPS
DESCRIPTION:Global aviation connects people and makes our world much smaller and accessible. But just like the events of 9/11 forever changed airport security protocols\, COVID-19 is changing how airports and airlines operate to ensure our health and safety. There have been many changes already established among world airports to protect our health\, but the guidelines are still being written as we learn more about this pandemic. In this Webinar\, Brian Cobb and Doug Goldberg will share some of the technological and procedural initiatives that are being developed at the world’s leading airports for this pandemic environment in North America\, Europe and Asia to help us return to a new normal. We will discuss some of the challenges and metrics surrounding global air travel\, discuss changing policies\, and present some of the experts’ forecasts and expectations about the future of air travel\, with the hope that we will regain the confidence to resume traveling again! \nFree to register!\n$10 Suggested Donation \nhttps://globalcincinnati.networkforgood.com/projects/98203-main-giving-page

DESCRIPTION:COVER TO COVER\nFeaturing Michael Klare on May 14\, 2020 \nRegister now for WACA’s Cover to Cover conference call on Thursday\, May 14\, at 2:00-2:30 PM ET\, featuring Michael Klare\, Senior Visiting Fellow at the Arms Control Association and Professor Emeritus of Peace and World Security Studies at Hampshire College. \nAll Hell Breaking Loose: The Pentagon’s Perspective on Climate Change \nOf all major institutions in American society\, none take climate change as seriously as the U.S. military and the Pentagon. Drawing on previously obscure reports and government documents\, renowned security expert Michael Klare shows that the U.S. military sees the climate threat as imperiling the country on several fronts at once. The military now regards climate change as one of the top threats to American national security\, and is busy developing strategies to cope with it.

SUMMARY:Limits to Internet Growth | Livestream
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT WILL NOW BE LIVE STREAMED. \nTo access the link\, please email admin@sfcir.org to register. \nThe Internet is the largest thing that humanity has built. A Huawei consultant predicts that by 2030\, communications technologies could consume 51% of global electricity and emit 23% of greenhouse gas emissions. And yet\, the Internet’s footprint remains largely invisible and unregulated. Katie Singer will report on the Internet’s main energy guzzlers and some of the toxic waste-emitting supply chains of each smartphone’s 1000+ substances. She’ll also spell out how manufacturers\, service providers\, policy makers and individuals can each do their part to reduce the Internet’s footprint. \nA long-time resident of Santa Fe\, writer Katie Singer spoke about the Internet’s footprint on a panel with the climatologist Dr. James Hansen and at the United Nation’s 2018 Forum on Science\, Technology & Innovation. Visit www.ourweb.tech for more info.
