SUMMARY:America's Use of Force | Live Webinar Event
DESCRIPTION:America’s approach to the use of force has evolved so much since 1789 that the founders would no longer recognize it. From the Constitution to the War Powers Act to the Authorization for the Use of Military Force\, America’s military\, defense technology\, and enemies—not to mention its role in global security—have undergone profound shifts as well. Has law and practice kept up with the modern uses of force\, so frequently off regular battlefields\, in cyberspace\, perhaps even in space? This talk considers the frameworks political leaders use to make decisions about the use of force\, and whether those frameworks are sufficient to modern security challenges.\nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Z2s6YS5iTjOltuRt7_Mb3w\nRegistration is free\n$10 Suggested Donation

SUMMARY:Global Conversations DIGITAL: Food Security and Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:It is often said that foreign policy is about connecting means with ends. With perhaps a few exceptions\, most agree that the ultimate end of U.S. foreign policy should be a more prosperous\, sustainable\, and secure world. Yet today\, food security around the globe remains a pressing challenge\, especially in low-income\, conflict-prone\, and climate-affected areas. \nFollowing decades of decline in hunger\, the number of hungry people globally is once again rising – this trend made all the worse by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Patching up vulnerabilities in food systems remains paramount in ending hunger around the world and such trends pose challenges – some new\, some old – to U.S. foreign policy. \nHear from a panel of experts as they explore U.S. food security and current gaps in policy\, particularly as they relate to the effects of COVID-19. \nPanelists\n\nAsma Lateef\, Director\, Bread for the World Institute\nRob Paarlberg\, Associate at Harvard University’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs and Adjunct Professor at Harvard Kennedy School\nAbigail Rockwell\, Director\, Office of Global Food Security\, U.S. Department of State\nCaitlin Welsh\, Director\, Global Food Security Program\, Center for Strategic and International Studies\nModerator: Tina May\, Chief of Staff to Land O’Lakes CEO Beth Ford\n\nThis event will be live-streamed on YouTube. SUMMARY:The Key Swing States of the 2020 Election - With LA Times Political Writer Seema Mehta & Politics Professor Dan Schnur
DESCRIPTION:Part 5 of our 2020 Election Series will analyze how the nation’s geographical cleavages —battleground states\, urban-rural divides\, and regional differences — will play out on election night. The discussion will be led by Political Communications Professor Dan Schnur of USC\, UC-Berkeley\, and Pepperdine\, who will be joined by Seema Mehta\, political reporter for the Los Angeles Times covering the 2020 presidential campaign. As with all presidential elections\, battleground states will determine this year’s outcome. Yet\, the number of swing states in 2020 is far larger than we’ve seen in any recent election. The key swing states from 2016 such as Florida\, Michigan\, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin will again play an immense role this year. But long-time blue states like Minnesota and historic red states like Arizona and Georgia are looking more competitive as well. How are Trump and Biden campaigning in this battleground saturated environment? This discussion will help listeners make sense of how these shifting geographical politics are mapping onto the race.

SUMMARY:The Future of U.S. Policy on Iran: Analyzing Trump's “Maximum Pressure Campaign" & What to Expect in the Future
DESCRIPTION:For forty-one years the United States has been locked in an unending conflict with the Islamic Republic in Iran. From hostage crisis to illicit financing of terrorism\, empowerment of foreign proxies in targeting U.S. interests and the relations between the two countries have been unendingly tense but also marked by a desire for engagement by every American administration. How has President Trump’s Iran policy differed from other administrations and has it achieved the desired objectives? Should Iranians attitude\, in light of the recent protests against the Supreme Leader and calls for change be taken into consideration in the future U.S. foreign policy towards Iran? How should future U.S. administrations approach the growing trend in Iran to diminish Islamic Republic’s hegemony in the region and people’s gravitation towards better relations with the West?

SUMMARY:Building Strategic Power through Exchanges
DESCRIPTION:This interactive virtual session will provide international relations students\, interns\, and foreign affairs professionals an in-depth understanding of the role of exchange programs in global power dynamics and strategic power and offer networking opportunities with foreign affairs related organizations. \nA global threat or crisis can be addressed through diplomacy\, military intervention\, or communication between cities and people. Based on current appropriations\, the United States spends nearly 500 times as much on the military as it does on broadcasting and exchange programs. Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen sent a letter to Congressional leadership in February 2020 urging the full funding of the International Affairs budget. He included a handwritten inscription that read “the more we cut the International Affairs Budget\, the higher the risk for longer and deadlier military operations.” \nDuring this pandemic\, we have seen a greater need for cooperation among governments and institutions. That comprehensive\, cooperative response utilizes the full range of tools at the government’s disposal and is sometimes called Smart Power or Strategic Power. \nThe U.S. Department of State has numerous international exchange programs that help achieve U.S. foreign policy goals. Its premier professional exchange\, the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP)\, celebrates its 80th year in 2020. Members of this panel will discuss the benefits of using hard and soft power in tandem to create an integrated strategy. Panelists will focus on the impact of exchange programs to enhance our public diplomacy efforts on complex global issues. Giles Scott Smith\, author and educator will focus on the historic impact of the IVLP as an effective tool to build the strategic alliances that can enhance contextual intelligence. Ambassador Barbara Stephenson\, Vice Provost for Global Affairs at the University of North Carolina will share her thoughts on the ability of the U.S. government to use IVLP and other exchange programs to ensure that our key partners have an in-depth understanding of the United States. Colonel Chris Wade will discuss how exchanges can build relationships that foster the necessary connections to ensure effective military collaboration on the global stage.
