SUMMARY:GREAT DECISIONS: The Middle East: Regional Disorder
DESCRIPTION:The Middle East: Regional Disorder\nBy Lawrence G. Potter \nAs the presidency of Donald J. Trump passes the halfway point\, the Middle East remains a region in turmoil. The Trump administration has aligned itself with strongmen in Saudi Arabia\, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt\, which along with Israel have a common goal of frustrating Iranian expansion. What will be the fallout from policy reversals such as withdrawing from the Iranian nuclear accord and moving the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem? Does the United States see a path forward in troubled states such as Syria\, Yemen\, Libya\, and Iraq? Is the United States headed toward war with Iran? \nThis program will be held in the Chapel at St. John’s UU Church\, 320 Resor Ave.\, Clifton\, from 12:45 – 2:15 p.m.  Brown bag lunches are welcome to be eaten while we watch the DVD together before the discussion. \n If you did not purchase a briefing book in the fall and would like to do the same background reading as many others in the group\, you can order one from the Foreign Policy Association\, www.fpa.org. If not\, try to do some research on the topic before coming.  No registration is necessary.

SUMMARY:The Fabric of India Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Fabric of India Exhibition\, from Oct. 19 to Jan 6th.  \nOrganized by the prestigious Victoria and Albert Museum in London\, this exhibition is the first to fully explore the dynamic and multifaceted world of handmade textiles from India. The exhibition showcases the finest examples from the V&A’s world-renowned collection together with masterpieces from international partners\, leading designers\, and additions from the Cincinnati Art Museum’s own outstanding permanent collection. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore a stunning range of historic dress\, heirloom fabrics\, and cutting-edge fashion. \nIndia’s handmade textiles are embedded in every aspect of its identity and the history of these fabrics date back at least 6000 years. The oldest surviving cotton threads\, from around 4000 BCE\, were exported from India. Dyed textiles from the region are documented as far back as 2500 BCE. Textiles are so central to India’s identity that in ancient Greece and Babylon the very name ‘India’ was shorthand for ‘cotton’. \nThe six thematic sections will explore courtly splendor that was proclaimed by sumptuous fabrics\, while religious worship found expression through finely crafted sacred cloths. Centuries of global trade shaped by the export of Indian textiles exemplify the robust aesthetic exchange engaged in by artisans who reflected the culture of their clients in their work. India’s celebrated textiles survived the threat of industrialization and were used to unite India as a symbol of power and protest in the quest for independence in the early twentieth century. Today\, Indian designers are adapting traditional techniques to create exciting new fashion\, art and design for a global audience\, giving India’s textile history a new relevance in the modern world.

SUMMARY:China's Maritime Aspirations
DESCRIPTION:THE CURRENT CRISIS IN US-CHINA RELATIONS\nUS-China relations are in a troubling downward spiral.  Washington takes strong exception to Beijing’s “Made in China 2025 Development Strategy” and related unfair trading practices\, as well as China’s rapid military buildup.  In particular\, many US strategists are troubled by China’s creation of extensive reef bases in the South China Sea.  The so-called Belt and Road Strategy has also prompted anxiety in Washington and other world capitals.  For its part\, China has strongly objected to America’s “Rebalance to Asia\,” and feels that a containment strategy is in the offing now with Trump Administration’s “Indo-Pacific Strategy.”  Beijing has also been rattled by Washington’s new support for Taiwan\, as well as the North Korean nuclear crisis that is far from resolved.  This lecture will touch upon all aspects of US-China relations\, but will focus in particular upon the three noteworthy flashpoints:  the South China Sea\, the North Korea nuclear issue\, and also the Belt and Road Initiative.  Prof. Goldstein will discuss insights from his in-depth research in Chinese sources.  He will also offer policy recommendations that could help to improve US-China relations\, moving beyond the present crisis in the bilateral relationship.\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:2018 Beaujolais Nouveau Première
DESCRIPTION:Always held on the third Thursday in November\, the Beaujolais Nouveau traditionally celebrates the first wine of the grape harvest and has evolved into a worldwide gathering in a French atmosphere.\n\nThe French-American Business Alliance of the EACC will once again host a Beaujolais Nouveau celebration for the Greater Cincinnati region. As one of the largest in the area\, this premiere event brings together a dynamic corporate network for both EACC members and the public to enjoy.\n\nThis year\, we are excited to feature live music from the jazz quartet The Faux Frenchmen. We will also showcase the Taft Museum of Art’s upcoming exhibition Paris to New York: Photographs by Eugène Atget and Berenice Abbott\, and wine educators from Wine Trends will be on hand to share their expertise about Beaujolais wines. \nWe are delighted to welcome Jack Keegan\, Greenhouse Manager and Instructor in the Biology Department at Miami University\, as our Celebrity Auctioneer. Jack has taught Viticulture and Enology or the “Wines” course to over 6\,000 students since 1995. \nBeaujolais Nouveau Première serves as one of the largest fundraising opportunities for the EACC to deliver on its mission to stimulate business and networking development between Greater Cincinnati and Europe. Again this year\, the event will feature a silent auction to support the work of the EACC. The silent auction will feature a unique selection of European-American themed items\, including two round-trip tickets to Europe donated by Delta Airlines\, and items that showcase Greater Cincinnati. \nPlease join us for an evening of networking and celebration among members of Greater Cincinnati’s international business community. \n\nRegister Here.
