SUMMARY:Around the World in 5 Tea & Dessert Pairings
DESCRIPTION:Fueling Inspiration: One Steep at A Time!\nAll contributions will benefit World Affairs Council 100%. \n\nJoin us to celebrate and be thankful for the many cultures that specialize in tea in November! \nTo honor “tea culture” in our community\, we are excited to introduce a special event that presents teas and desserts featuring different culture backgrounds. Bring your friends (or the whole family) to follow us around the world as we showcase 5 perfect pairings of teas with decadent desserts enjoyed by different cultures from the East to the West hosted by Churchill’s Fine Teas in Hyde Park Square. \nHear the stories and the lifestyle of the cultures behind these teas and desserts. Enjoy the live “music” performance\, while you enjoy these diverse teas and dessert pairings. You will exclusively be meeting the owner\, Angela Qu\, as well to hear her story and passion for tea and her community. \nJoin us for what will most likely be the most delicious and culturally inspiring day you have ever had. \nMeet the Owner – “Our Journey” \nLike a lot of small businesses\, Churchill’s began with a small spark of passion. Over the last twenty years that spark has ignited and grew into two shops with a team passionate about tea and sharing tea moments. Churchill’s Fine Teas has been serving teas and promoting health benefits of teas in our communities for over 20 years. Many of our customers and team members have become friends. We’ve remained woman owned and operated as we’ve moved\, expanded\, opened pop-ups and new locations\, won awards\, and collaborated with the very best of Cincinnati. We’ve finished every single day with a feeling of gratitude to have such amazing and passionate customers\, partners\, neighbors\, tea growers and brilliant team members. Our founder created the business to promote the English tea culture in 2003 and has established it as a staple in our communities. Today\, our mission continues and expands to different tea selections and tea cultures. Yerba Mate\, Matcha\, and Bubble Teas are trending and we would like to introduce you to the fascinating cultures behind them\, besides our staple selections of black tea\, green tea\, oolong tea\, white tea\, rooibos\, and herbal & wellness blends. \nAs we celebrate the last twenty years\, our commitment to our customers for the next twenty years is the same – “Fueling Inspiration\, One Steep At A Time!” \nWe wish you the best on your tea journey\, \nAngela Qu and the Churchill’s Fine Teas Team \n \n

How he has achieved this over our history has come largely by his ability to persuade others to follow his leads. Given we are in a Presidential election year\, the art of persuasion will be a key aspect to who wins the outcome. \nIn this presentation\, Mr. Talmage Boston\, presidential historian\, will describe the powers of persuasion used by eight of the greatest presidents: Washington\, Jefferson\, Lincoln\, Theodore Roosevelt\, Franklin Roosevelt\, Eisenhower\, Kennedy and Reagan. \nCome hear presidential historian Talmage Boston deliver this important message on September 5\, as he discusses his new book\, How the Best Did It: Leadership Lessons From Our Top Presidents—which has been endorsed by the country’s leading presidential historians\, including Pulitzer Prize winners Jon Meacham\, Doris Kearns Goodwin\, and Annette Gordon-Reed. \nHow the Best Did It takes the leadership lessons gained from our greatest presidents and makes them instructive today for all leaders who seek to enhance their performance. \n\nWant to get promoted without being seen as a self-promoter? Do what Washington did.\nWant to reduce conflict among your group’s factions? Do what Jefferson did.\nWant to know how to take the high road when major problems arise? Do what Lincoln did.\nWant to expand your power into entirely new areas of influence? Do what Theodore Roosevelt did.\nWant to move the needle steadily until ultimate goals are achieved? The Dan Schnur Political Report offers a different way to consume political information. Dan moves beyond the partisan noise to analyze the core issues and critical headlines shaping our world. Dan not only offers a fresh perspective to understand politics\, he invites everyone into the conversation.

SUMMARY:Virtual Panel Event: Child Protective Services in the US and Tajikistan: Relevance\, Laws\, Agencies\, and Programs
DESCRIPTION:Join us in partnership with the Northern Kentucky’s Public Administration Master’s Program for this exciting panel who will engage in a dialogue about child protection services and the relevant laws\, agencies\, and programs in the United States and in the Republic of Tajikistan. Important laws include the Child Abuse Protection and Adoption Reform Act in the USA and the Family Code of the Republic of Tajikistan. A variety of agencies (federal\, state\, and local) are involved in protecting children’s rights in the USA and in Tajikistan. Panelists will discuss some of the key policies\, programs\, and services that these agencies offer and some of the challenges that they face. The goal of this panel is to learn from each other while at the same time identifying the cultural differences that may help explain some of the uniqueness in implementing child protection services in these two countries. \n\nWe are excited to have the following panelists: \n\nDr. Amy Halbrook is a professor of Law and Director of the NKU Chase law Center Clinic. She has represented clients in a wide range of court proceedings\, including child protection\, high-conflict custody\, juvenile justice\, school discipline and in many other related matters. She teaches the Children Law Center Clinic course\, Family law\, Juvenile Law\, Children and Law\, Mediation and Client-Centered Practice.\n\n  \n\nDr. Saidmukhtorov has a Ph.D. in International Public Law\, from Russian People’s Friendship University. He is currently the Head for the International Law program\, at the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan. He has an extensive background in children’s law in Tajikistan\, and has served as a legal counsel and legal specialist for various private corporations and the government of Tajikistan. He has offered numerous seminars on children rights and legal issues in Tajikistan and in Russia\, and deliberated as a lawyer on many cases related to children’s rights in Tajikistan.\n\n  \n\nJudge Kari Bloom serves as the administrative judge of the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas Juvenile Division\, overseeing its day-to-day operations. Prior to being elected to the Court of Common Pleas in 2021\, she served as an attorney in the Hamilton County Public Defender’s Office and also as a legislative liaison and parole attorney in the Office of the Ohio Public Defender. Judge Bloom has testified on behalf of juvenile justice issues in the Ohio General Assembly and has served on several statewide boards and commissions including the Ohio Supreme Court Juvenile Justice Committee. She participated in systemic policy work to increase access to courts\, reconcile conflicting laws\, collect and disperse criminal sentencing data\, and rectify the lasting effects of “tough on crime” legislation.\n\nThe event will be a Zoom Webinar and will be recorded and posted on our Youtube for those who cannot attend.

Connect with a teacher to assist in your initiative. \nStep 2: Write out your project description that aligns with the “take action” in your research. \nFor example\, a student/teacher could receive up to $1000 to start or expand a student club. The club must meet at least two times a month to research local issues for their school or community. This will then be followed up by an initiative which will be reported back to the World Affairs Council. Funds could be used to get snacks for the meetings and for the selected project. This is only one example\, we encourage you to also be creative! \n\n\n\n\nHow much funding can you receive? \nFive grants of up to $1000 will be awarded! \nWhat is the deadline to apply? \nSubmissions are due November 27\, 2023. \nClick here for more information and to apply!

SUMMARY:Climate Migration with United States Institute of Peace
DESCRIPTION:  \nRegister Here \nThe links between climate change\, conflict\, and human mobility are complex. In 2022\, disasters internally displaced 32.6 million people\, more than at any other time over the last decade. Most of these displacements occurred in areas that are fragile or conflict-prone. In fact\, ninety percent of all refugees come from places that are some of the most vulnerable to climate-related impacts. Right now\, these fragile regions already grapple with increased food insecurity\, unemployment\, and competition over resources – particularly water. In what ways does climate change exacerbate such situations? In what ways may that lead to conflict or forced migration? \nIn partnership with Green Umbrella\, we invite students\, educators\, and community members for an evening exploring Climate Conflict and Climate Migration with Kayly Ober\, Senior Program Officer for U.S. Institute of Peace. \nKayly Ober is a senior program officer for the climate\, environment and conflict program at USIP. In this role\, she leads research and analysis on climate change\, migration and displacement as well as transboundary water and conflict issues. \nPrior to USIP\, she was the senior advocate and program manager of the climate displacement program at Refugees International. She also served as a member of the Task Force on Displacement established under the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage. She has worked on climate change and migration issues for more than 15 years\, during which time she has held positions at organizations such as the Asian Development Bank\, the Overseas Development Institute\, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars\, and the World Bank\, where she authored the flagship report “Groundswell: Preparing for Internal Climate Migration.” \nOber holds a master’s in environment and development from the London School of Economics and a bachelor’s in international studies from American University. She is currently completing her doctorate in geography at the University of Bonn\, where her dissertation analyzes policymaking and governance structures around the climate change-adaptation-migration nexus.
