Through global education, international exchange, and cultural awareness initiatives, the council strengthens Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky’s international identity and engages individuals with foreign affairs.

Art Meets World Showcase
The Global Classrooms program expanded to incorporate art education projects, transforming classroom presentations into experiential learning activities. To further develop intercultural understanding and awareness of being a good global citizen, students met with people from our community from Japan, China, Mexico, and India then together, they created an art project respective to each country. With an intentional focus to collaborate with Northern Kentucky schools, over 800 elementary students celebrated cultural diversity and inclusion in our community.
The academic year kicked off with hosting our first Art Meets World Showcase. Thank you to the Hellmann Creative Center and The Center for Great Neighborhoods of Covington for partnering with us as we celebrated a very successful year!
Thank you to our Global Guides from India, Japan, China, and Mexico for sharing their culture with our local students.

Four-person teams compete by answering multiple-choice questions divided into ten unique and engaging thematic categories.
Approximately 4000 students across the country participate in competitions hosted by 50 local World Affairs Councils across the United States, including us! Winning teams are invited to represent their high school, city, and local council at the national competition held in the spring each year in Washington, DC.

Council Events & Programming
Global Ties U.S. Conference | San Diego
This year our Executive Director, Michelle Harpenau and Director of International Programs, James McManus represented our local Council at the Global Ties U.S. National Meeting in Washington D.C.
The Diplomacy Begins Here Regional Summits bring together leaders in business, government, and nonprofit organizations to forge new connections with local communities around exchange programming and issues. They also serve as an opportunity for local communities to deepen their understanding of U.S. foreign policy, public diplomacy, and how exchange programs such as the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) play a role in each.
International Dinners
Thank you to Chris and Gita Huntington for hosting Global Eats dinner for supporters of the World Affairs Council’s global education programs. It was a delicious evening with homemade Indonesian foods prepared by the Huntington’s. This multi-cultural family shared an Indonesian tasting menu with locals with foods such as Sop Buntut, Oxtail Soup; Gado-Gado, Indonesian salad with peanut sauce dressing; and Ayam Goreng Kalasan, Japanese fried chicken.
Michelle Harpenau, ED of WAC – her favorite dish was Rendang Sapi, beef stew with coconut milk and spices. Gita and Chris made the experience one to remember by dressing in traditional Indonesian clothing and sharing cultural fun facts and information all night long.
Thank you to all our supporters of global education. If you are interested in this experience, make sure you keep an eye out for our annual One World Gala coming in March 2020. You too will be able to have this Global Eats experience next year.

Semi-Finalists for the NKY Funders’ Grants
EXCITING NEWS!! We are a semi-finalist for the NKY Funders’ Grants!
During this competition, we have the chance to pitch new ideas and action plans intended to help Northern Kentucky residents and community members.
Watch this video of our Executive Director, Michelle Harpenau as she talks about her fast pitch – 30 for 30!!!
Unfortunately, we were not selected to move onto the final round; however, we now have a great pitch to share and we are seeking support to put 30 Build the World Map Games in the 30 NKY elementary schools in Kenton, Campbell, and Boone Counties. This step in discovery helps students know there is a world bigger than their backyard and that they can aspire to see it. With your help, we can broaden the horizons of our elementary students in Northern Kentucky and ignite their curiosity to visit places they never knew existed. Please donate now!
You can also attend the NKY Funders’ Fast Pitch event on October 29th to hear all the wonderful causes that will be supported. Click here to sign up.
